Northwest Nordic Ski Club

Northwest Nordic Ski Club, a non-profit ski club catering to Chicago area cross-country skiing enthusiasts, is dedicated to encouraging participation in cross-country skiing. The group was founded 20 years ago by cross country skiers in the northwest Chicago suburbs. Our activities encourage physical fitness, friendships and increased awareness of the outdoor environment.

Beginner information:

The club may do some informal easy ski outings at a local park or golf course during the season, snow permitting. (Rental equipment is available at Village Cycle Sport, Elk Grove store (Higgins and A.H. Road) or the Barrington store on Northwest Highway only, at a special club discount or at the REI store in Schaumburg.)

The local River Prairie Group of the Sierra Club does an annual x-c ski clinic weekend in southern Wisconsin each January. See their website at illinois.sierraclub.org/rpg or e-mail Steve, sdturner@gmail.com.

Camp Sagawau (on Ill. 83 near Lemont), a part of the Palos area Forest Preserve system, offers x-c ski lessons and rentals and has 6 km of groomed trails. To reserve a spot for a lesson, call 630-257-2045.

Heller Nature Center, 2821 Ridge Road (north of Rte. 22), Highland Park, 847-433-6901, offers rentals, has 3 miles of trails open when there is a 4-inch snow base, and may offer lessons this year.

Arrowhead Golf Course (26W151 Butterfield Road, Wheaton, 630-653-5800 ext. 4) rents equipment and opens the course for skiing if 6” of snow or more. Lessons on Saturdays starting in January; call Jen Saylor, 630-510-5136.

Sportsman's Country Club, 3535 Dundee Rd., Northbrook, offers groomed trails when there is a 4-6" base. They offer x-c ski lessons and rentals. Lessons begin on Saturdays in January, 10 A.M.-noon, $15 (not including equipment.) To sign up, call 847-292-2351, ext. 3.

Let's celebrate (our valiant efforts to have) a successful 2013 ski season (in the face of a second year of sparse snow)!

When?   Friday, April 5, 7:00 P.M.

Where?  the private banquet room at Continental Restaurant, 788 S. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove, in the Dominick's shopping center at Dundee Road

Details:  We will order off of the menu.  The restaurant has a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, and entrees to choose from.   (Please bring cash in case separate checks are not available.)
